C&K Trucking — Paving Our Road Green
|
C&K takes pride in being involved in our communities and makes caring for our environment a top priority. Through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Smartway Transport program, C&K has achieved the highest rating of 1.25 and is honored to be a Smartway Transport Partner. Although, C&K is proud of this accomplishment, we recognize that there’s more to being Green and we have committed to reduce our carbon footprint in all aspects of our business.
Most of C&K’s environmental efforts are focused on technologies and efficiencies to improve our MPG (miles per gallon), which results in decreased carbon dioxide emissions (CO2e) for every mile traveled. During 2009, C&K reduced its CO2e output by 4.9%, an equivalent to taking 345 passenger vehicles off the roads. We achieved this through some of the following efforts:
• Installed software on tractors to monitor and track various driver and fuel efficiency metrics
• Retrofitted 10 units such that CO2e is estimated to be reduced by 40%
• Developed over 1,000 backhauls to reduce empty miles
• Purchased 3 new tractors with 2007 compliant engines that reduce CO2e by approximately 50%
• Hauled 3% more 53’ trailers versus 40’ to deliver more freight per mile driven compared to 2008
• Speed management policies to limit the maximum speed for drivers and improve fuel efficiency
For 2010, C&K is projected to further decrease CO2e by an additional 2.9%, equivalent to an additional 356 passenger vehicles removed from the roads1. These improvements will come from the following 2010 initiatives:
• Complete software installations on remainder of company and owner operated tractors, such that the entire fleet will be monitored and tracked
• Retrofit an additional 18 units, which results in a total of 28 units which reduce CO2e by an estimated 40%
• Increase number of backhauls by 100% to over 2,000 moves
• Deliver more freight per mile driven by hauling 2% more 53’ trailers versus 40’
• Purchase five tri-axles with automatic tire inflation systems to maintain tire pressure for fuel efficiency
• Idle reduction and speed management policies to improve MPG
With all the efforts noted above, C&K will have reduced its CO2e output by 7.2% since 2008.
*Mileage increase for 2010 reflects acquisition of TMS. For the year over year comparison, mileage for 2009 is assumed to equal 2010.
**Per U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the average passenger vehicle emits 5.2 metric tons of CO2e annually.
Results within C&K’s company owned and operated equipment have been even more Impressive. Our company fleet will see an improvement from an average of 5.5 MPG to 6.1 MPG since 2008. That 10.9% increase in fuel efficiency along with other measures noted above has dramatically reduced CO2e.
In addition to C&K’s efforts within its fleet, C&K has taken measures to “Go Green” companywide. Here are a few examples:
• Recycling centers are located at all offices
• Employees are encouraged to use paper responsibly
• Employee travel has been reduced through video conferencing
• Compact fluorescent light bulbs replace existing incandescent bulbs
• AV Logistics, an affiliate, prioritizes freight to Green companies
The road towards environmental sustainability is long and cannot be achieved by a single person, company, or initiative. That is why at C&K, we make these efforts a part of every employee’s daily routine and encourage good environmental practices through companywide goals and compensation.
C&K strives to be an exemplary corporate citizen and has chosen to take a proactive role in caring for the environment. We are proud of our results over the past two years and take pride in the 7.2% reduction in CO2e achieved by year end 2010. However, we recognize that there is more to accomplish and the road towards a sustainable environment is difficult. Therefore, you can rely on C&K to continue to make improvements companywide to further reduce its CO2e output on an annual basis.
C&K cares for the environment and provides safe, reliable, value-added drayage services. We will remain proactive in our mission to “Pave the Road Green,” and continually make efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.
